Memory of Dorothy (Dot)

A Memory of Aunt Dot
by Susan Jane Leavitt submitted August 2014

The day I met aunt Dot and Uncle charlie was on my wedding day. Grant and I were married in the Los Angeles Temple on August 2, 1969. The only ones that were with us at the temple were my sister and her husband and Aunt Dot and Uncle Charlie. In fact, I actually didn't meet them until after the endowment session and we were waiting for a sealing room. There were 36 marriages that day and we were #36, so we had quite a long time to wait. Aunt Dot was so excited to meet me. she said out of all the brides she saw (36) during the session, she had picked out me to be Grant's bride. Uncle Charlie was one of our witnesses during our sealing. it was special to both Grant and I to have them with us that day.

It was nice when they moved to Utah County in the early 1970's, Grant and I would visit them quite often as we also visited Aunt hazel and Uncle Hal. It was nice to have family to visit and they were always there to support us during baby blessings and baptisms of our children. We appreciated their support and having our children get to know them. Aunt Dot would talk to me often on the phone and would always to being me about her grandchildren because she was so proud of them. She would also talk about how she had just finished scrubbing her floors, dusting and just generally being so tidy. I always would think of her as I'd try to be as tidy as her.

Many of you know that I put together two different recipe books entitled "Leavitt Luscious Recipes." It was Aunt Dot that convinced me to make the original recipe book in 1997. Many thanks to Dot for remember what I suggested ten years previously (in 1987) and getting the "ball" rolling. By creating the recipe book, I became acquainted with many of you through your recipes even if it was mostly by name at first.

August 1969 by Grant Leavitt written April 2003

August 1969

Grant spent the summer in California with Susan and her parents while they planned their wedding that took place on the 2nd of August in the LA Temple. Grant worked at the same place he did the previous summer that his family spent in California and also helped Susan’s family fix up their yard for the reception. The day before the wedding, Dad, Mom, June and Joy came to California. Dad and Mom stayed in a motel in Burbank while June and Joy stayed with Aunt Dot and Uncle Charlie.  It was special to have Dad and Mom drive Grant and Susan to the temple really early on the 2nd. They didn’t have their temple recommend so they dropped them off at the temple but were there 7 hours later with Susan’s Dad to greet them as a married couple. By them doing this, they were a very good example to Susan’s parents who were not LDS.  It showed what integrity Ken and Afton had to be honest even though it meant they couldn’t see their son be married.  After pictures were taken at the temple, Dad and Mom took Grant and Susan out for a late lunch and then to get ready for the reception.

Aunt Dot (Dorothy) and Uncle Charlie by Milt Lytle August 2014

Aunt Dot (Dorothy) and Uncle Charlie spent their working years in California until they retired and moved to Utah to be close to the family. Uncle Charlie liked to golf so he spent his time on the golf courses. They moved to Provo and than later moved to a mobile home in Orem. Linda and I had lunch with them once when they lived in Orem and also visited them at their home in Provo. As a child, I always looked forward to their visits when they came to visit from California on vacation. I had to smile when Mike called the black hill in Veyo behind our home, the mountain. I guess living in the city it would be a mountain.

Story of Andrews death submitted by Viola Seitz Schiefer

Andrew was called to be the Bishop of the Veyo ward. About six months later he received a promotion with the company so that the family could move to Veyo and live in their two room home. It was very small with three children and another on the way. They set their hearts on building a new larger home. They drew up the plans and hired a contractor. Then disaster struck the family.
