Story of Mom’s Birth
It was 7 August when word came that Sister Laura Knight , the mid wife, must return home as mother there needed her. She had been in Gunlock staying with Grandpa and Grandma Leavitt Edward Washington Leavitt, waiting my mother’s birth. As Grandma watched the wagon pull away and head down the creek, she had a lonely uncared for feeling. She thought of the saying
‘watched pots never boil.’ That’s the way she felt. She felt she would still be waiting if Sister Knight had not gone home. However before many hours things began to happen. She wondered if she would be able to manage. Then fate took a hand. Before the day was over Sister Hunt, another midwife came to Gunlock. Grandma had the help she needed. Lila was a nice healthy, baby girl and seemed stronger for the extra week of waiting. Grandpa chose the name, Delilah in honor of Grandma Leavitt’s (Eltheria) sister who was called Dell. Lila was the third daughter for the family Belle, Vilate, Glen then our mom. On September 1, 1907 Lila was taken to Church to receive her name and blessing. Lila was dressed in long, floor length, beautiful white gown with tucks and lace. Grandma made it especially for her. Uncle Jim Bunker (James Lang Bunker) performed the blessing. Grandma Leavitt was ninety years old when she told this story to Aunt Verna.
