Memories of the family

Information given to Susan J Leavitt in 1997
During my early years, sugar was scarce but we always had plenty of good old Gunlock molasses so we made many things such as Molasses Candy, Molasses Cake, Molasses Cookies, which we all very good. My mother often made a steamed pudding with fruits, nuts, etc., always plenty of raisins. When the things were combined, she would put it in a heavy sack and drop it into a kettle of boiling water and steam it for several hours. This was then served with a sauce or dip and we LOVED it. She called it a Pumpling. Much like our steam puddings of today. I also remember how delicious the Molasses was with hot biscuits and butter.
