Onward and upward

Lila and the four children stayed in St George for two week after Iona’s birth to be near the doctor. He was very concerned about her condition. Not only was she weak from her rheumatic heart condition and the strain on it from having the baby but she had so much to face alone.

Iona cried a lot the doctor felt she was not getting any milk. He had Lila put her on a formula immediately she became one happy baby.

Lila both felt the urgency to go back to Veyo and the fear of what faced her when she got there. It was a heartbreaking adjustment, life alone. There were difficult decisions to make.

First she needed to access her assets; Andrew had a small life insurance policy, $10,000. She knew it would not last long, the Power Company offered her a job in their office, I think it was located in Cedar City Utah. If she took the job which would mean some financial security but also meant moving away from her family and being away from her children all day every day.

Andrew owned some property in Diamond Valley; they had their lot and a two room home in Veyo. She faced the fact that she had only an 8th grade education no special training and not good health. As she prayed and reasoned she felt it necessary to stay in Veyo, Andrew had willingly given his life that his children could have a mother. She needed a larger home. She did not need the Diamond Valley farm, a car, and who knows what other assets she felt needed to be sacrificed in order for her to raise her four fatherless children. In a way it was good that she had heavy decisions to make as she concentrated on those her grief was relegated to a lesser area of importance; restricted mostly to nights.
