Bruno and Suey by Grant Leavitt written April 2003

Bruno and Suey
The family had a dog named Bruno. She was pretty tame around all the family but not around strangers. She never barked, she just took care of the problem. There are still fishermen in the area that won’t come around the Ranch because of Bruno’s reputation and that was in about 1964. Bruno had pups one Spring. About the same time an old sow had a litter of piglets. There was one little boar pig that had big eye teeth and couldn’t suck.
When they found him, he was nearly starved to death. They took that pig in and fed him a teaspoon or 2 of coffee and some warm milk from a baby bottle. He kind of revived and they kept him warm for a few days before putting him back into the pigpen. He found a little opening in the pen and every time he got hungry, he would trot back into the house for a bottle. When the pig and the pups were about 6 weeks old, they walked outside and found Bruno nursing her pups and that pig right in the middle nursing with them. From that day on, he didn’t know if he was a dog or a pig.  The family named him Suey. All the family can still picture the pet pig running around the barnyard. Suey followed the family around just like a dog. Uncle Wesley would walk up the field with Bruno following him and Suey following Bruno. It was quite the sight. There was times Suey even though he was human. He even tried to crawl into grant’s sleeping bag one evening when the family was outside sleeping. Grant kicked him out and Suey got his feelings hurt. He stuck his head into a fee sack. The next morning they found Suey with his head stuck inside the sack.

Suey use to love to have his belly scratched. Ken found it convenient when he needed to castrate Suey. Poor pig never really seemed to trust anyone after that!
